Focus

A few days ago, I had an interview for a potential consulting job. This consulting job involves implementing NetSuite, a finance SaaS platform.

Coming from a few product manager jobs, I asked them if they ever thought of “productizing” certain services so that they could create recurring revenue instead of always relying on time/billing.

I have a lot of friends and acquaintances in the industry who were very receptive to this idea.

However, my interviewer cut me off pretty early on and said “Oh I know exactly where you’re going with this.” And then followed up by saying “We’ve tried to identify some customizations that we can bundle, but right now we really want to focus on growing our NS practice and improving how we do implementations first.”

I loved the response.

It reminded me a lot of the saying “To be able to do great things, you have to learn how to say no to good ideas.”
